The Evolution Of Swing

Swing Dance InstructionThere is no better style when learning how to swing dance. Just pick one and run with it. Dancecrazy.com has all the information you need in our swing dance instruction video. A little history first...

The very first form of swing came to be 1913 with a dance called the Texas Tommy. This later gave way to the Mooch, the Break-A-Way and the Charleston. Eventually, the Lindy Hop name was given to the dance by George "Shorty" Snowden, a famous swing dancer from New York's Harlem neighborhood. Named the Lindy Hop after pilot Charles Lindbergh, a popular celebrity of the day, it is said to be the original swing dance.

The East Coast style of swing is simple in structure and footwork. Partners often mimic each other's moves and it is characterized by lots of hops. One style gives way to another and soon West Coast swing was born. The dancers do more footwork and spins and there is a lot more improvisation.

And then there is the Carolina Shag, the official state dance of South Carolina. It is also nicknamed "Beach Dancing" because it was said to have come from the Myrtle Beach area, although some will disagree and say that it is from the Atlantic Beach part. Wherever it is from, it's a fun, playful dance.
